A plain-English AI CX map
AI Customer Experience Software: Choose the Right CX Tools
Customer experience covers the customer's perception across many interactions; customer service is one part of it. This directory can help with AI used in support, self-service, agent work, ecommerce service, voice, and contact centers. It does not compare survey, product-experience, journey-analytics, loyalty, or marketing-personalization platforms.

What the terms mean
Start with the interaction you want to improve. Answering a question, completing an account change, helping a human agent, and understanding a customer journey call for different software and different evidence.
- Customer experience (CX)
- The customer's overall perception across interactions with a company. Support is material to CX, but it is not the whole discipline.
- AI customer experience, AI CX, or CX AI
- Broad labels for using AI across customer interactions. Narrow the search to a job before comparing software.
- CX automation
- Automation applied across customer interactions. It can include service workflows, proactive messages, routing, analysis, or orchestration.
- CCaaS
- Contact Center as a Service: cloud software and infrastructure for managing customer interactions across channels.
- Agent assist, copilot, or CX copilot
- AI that helps a human with context, knowledge, guidance, drafts, summaries, or quality work.
- IVA or virtual agent
- An intelligent virtual agent interacts with customers through text or voice. Confirm whether it only answers or also completes workflows.
Translate the CX term into a buying job
An evaluation framework, not a vendor score or capability certification.
| Criterion | Input or need | Evaluation scope | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer self-service | Answers from approved knowledge | Knowledge bot or support agent | Answer, citation, and escalation tests |
| Customer workflow | Looks up or changes a record | AI support agent or agentic workflow | System-of-record outcome |
| Human productivity | Guidance, drafts, summaries, QA | Agent assist or copilot | Human acceptance and corrected output |
| Phone operations | Voice interaction only | Voice agent or CCaaS platform | Latency, transfer, routing, and call record |
| CX insight | Survey or journey analysis | Outside this directory's current scope | Evaluate dedicated CXM or VoC tools |

Match AI customer experience software to the problem
If customers cannot find reliable answers, evaluate knowledge-grounded self-service. If agents spend time searching and writing, evaluate agent assist. If requests wait in the wrong queue, evaluate help-desk routing. If callers cannot complete a task, evaluate voice automation and human transfer.
Write the selection criterion as an observable result: the customer finds the current returns policy, the agent locates the right account record, or a transferred call reaches the right queue with context. Compare that outcome using the same sample requests for every shortlisted product.
CX is broader than the directory
Customer experience includes interactions before, during, and after a purchase. Customer support software influences part of that experience: how a question is answered, how an issue is resolved, how context moves between channels, and how a person takes over.
If the primary requirement is survey management, Voice of the Customer, product analytics, digital-experience analytics, loyalty, or marketing orchestration, this directory is not a complete market map. Use the guide to identify that mismatch before producing an irrelevant shortlist.
Choose the operating surface
Website and in-product questions often start with knowledge coverage and escalation. Email adds asynchronous ticket ownership and follow-up. Voice adds latency, interruptions, telephony, transfers, recording, and concurrency. Agent assist keeps a person in control but changes the training, review, and correction loop.
Map each channel to the system of record, customer identity, permitted actions, human queue, and measurable outcome. A claim of omnichannel coverage is not proof that context or action state survives a channel change.
Use experience measures carefully
Operational measures such as correct task completion, repeat contact, escalation quality, response time, and correction rate show what the system did. Customer measures such as satisfaction and effort show how the interaction was perceived. Use both when possible.
Do not assume lower handle time means a better experience, or that containment means resolution. Review negative outcomes and abandoned journeys alongside averages, and keep an accessible path to a person for customers the automation cannot serve well.
Take this to every vendor
Your evaluation checklist
- Write the customer interaction and desired outcome
- Choose the channels and system of record
- Decide whether AI answers, acts, assists a person, or analyzes
- List identity, privacy, permission, and accessibility requirements
- Test cross-channel context and human handoff
- Pair operational outcomes with customer effort or satisfaction measures
- Move broader survey, VoC, journey, loyalty, and marketing needs to a separate CX evaluation
The decision tool above includes this checklist in its agent-ready copy and styled PDF. Continue with the full pilot worksheet to record results against each shortlisted product.
Primary-source evidence
Short excerpts establish definitions and product boundaries. Vendor claims are not independent performance testing. Sources reviewed September 3, 2026.
“Customer experience is the total perception of the company, interaction by interaction, from the first touchpoint to the last.”
“CCaaS platforms integrate voice, digital, AI and analytics to orchestrate seamless customer and employee experiences.”
Language and multilingual support checks
A multilingual claim alone does not establish quality for your language. Test real questions, source material, channels, handoff, and the management interface.
DocsBot documents multilingual answers, including Japanese. Verify quality with your own content and workflow before buying.
For other providers, the precise Japanese and multilingual coverage shown here is not independently verified. Confirm the plan, model, channel, and handoff with each vendor.

| product | What to investigate | Catalog caution |
|---|---|---|
| Genesys Cloud CX AI | Contact-center operations: investigate routing, telephony, workforce needs and the AI capabilities in the proposed package. | AI capabilities and telephony costs are edition/add-on dependent; implementation can be complex. Profile sources · checked 2026-09-02 |
| DocsBot | Knowledge-based self-service: investigate source coverage and citations first; actions and voice are separate configuration and plan decisions.
| Voice agents are in beta and require Standard or above. Skills, ticket sources, Stripe actions, and advanced analytics have plan requirements. Phone and Slack tools differ from web-chat tools. Custom workflows need configuration, permissions, and testing; source quality and refresh schedules affect answers. AI credits vary with models and actions, and phone service and voice usage need separate budgeting. Profile sources · checked 2026-09-02 |
| Forethought AI Agents | Support assistance and automation: separate human-facing assistance, triage and direct resolution in the evaluation. | Pricing is quote-only; product availability and ownership/branding should be checked during procurement. Profile sources · checked 2026-09-02 |
| PolyAI Voice Assistants | Voice service interactions: test the phone workflow, interruptions, transfer context and integration ownership. | Quote-only and implementation-led; not a self-serve chatbot builder. Profile sources · checked 2026-09-02 |

Frequently asked questions
What is AI in customer experience?
AI in customer experience is a broad label for AI used across customer interactions. In support it can answer questions, complete approved workflows, assist human agents, operate voice interactions, or analyze conversations. Other CX uses such as surveys, journey analytics, and marketing personalization are outside this directory's current scope.
Are CX and customer service the same thing?
No. Customer service is one part of customer experience. CX includes the customer's perception across interactions such as discovery, purchase, onboarding, product use, support, and renewal. This site focuses on software used for support and service interactions.
What do CX, CCaaS, IVA, and agent assist mean?
CX means customer experience. CCaaS means Contact Center as a Service. IVA usually means intelligent virtual agent. Agent assist or copilot refers to AI that helps a human agent with knowledge, guidance, drafts, summaries, or quality work. Vendor boundaries vary, so map the term to a concrete job.
